We may find several definitions of Data Science: different kinds of people with various backgrounds were working in that field before it became identified as Data Science in the 80s and 90s.

One definition: Data Science is the process and method for extracting knowledge and insights from large volumes of disparate data.

Data Science has become more and more relevant as the quantity of data, storage capacity and computing power have dramatically increased over the past years.

A discipline at the cross-roads of many other ones

Data Science an interdisciplinary field involving different areas of expertise:

• Business knowledge to understand the problem,

• Statistical techniques to collect data and model solutions,

• Computer science to write / use programs to run analysis and generate results.

Artificial Intelligence and Data Science

Data Science can use many of the AI techniques to derive insight from data, but one is not a subset of the other.

Both AI and Data Science can involve the use of Big Data.
